CJ104. Convoluted Jasper rough rock, cut and polished on one side with a natural back and a cut base to stand on.
Dimensions at widest points approximately 150 mm x 70 mm x 55 mm thick
Weighs 1,110 grams.
Convoluted jasper comes from Turee Creek Station in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The location is about 160 km west of the iron ore mining town of Newman.
It occurs as outcrops and seams of jasper in a banded iron formation called "The Weeli Wooli Formation".
The age of this formation is around 2500 million years, so metamorphism and folding has added other interesting features such as cross cutting quartz veins and convolutions. An unusual feature of some pieces are septarian structures with black colouration, banding and small radiating quartz veins.
