Peanut Wood
Peanut wood is found along the edges of the Kennedy Ranges about 160 kms. inland from the coastal town of Carnarvon, Western Australia.
This petrified wood was named peanut wood by the first people who found it, presumably because they thought that the light coloured areas resembled peanuts.
The light coloured areas were originally holes bored into the wood by a marine bivalve called Teredo (shipworm). This indicates that the wood at one time was submerged or floating in the ocean prior to petrefaction.
